Apheresis (ay-fur-ee-sis) is an automated blood collection technology that allows a donor to give specific blood components, such as platelets. During the apheresis procedure, all but the needed blood components are returned to the donor. Apheresis technology allows The Center staff to tailor your blood donation to local demand. When customizing your donation, we consider factors like your blood type and how many times per year you donate. Donors currently can give platelet and red blood cells through apheresis at The Blood Center's 4300 N. Lamar location.
During your donation, blood is drawn and channeled through a sterile, single use tubing set into an automated system. Using a centrifuge built into the automated system, the most needed component is collected and then the remaining blood components are returned back to you. It takes between 70 minutes and 2 hours to complete this process. You may watch television or videotapes, listen to music, surf the Internet on our wireless Internet connection, or simply sit back and relax while helping to save a life. Because there are a limited number of apheresis stations, donors must schedule an appointment time for their donation.
What is the PhD program?
The PhD program acknowledges the life-saving contribution of platelet donors. The PhD program is a Hands of the Donor series. Once you have joined Hands of the Donor and have donated platelets for a fourth time in a calendar year, you will automatically become a PhD program participant.
As a member of the PhD program, you will earn points to be redeemed for items at our High-5 Online Store, as well as public recognition for your donation. As apheresis donors can donate up to 24 times per year, you will have the potential to earn an exceptional amount of store points. Also, your name will be displayed on an acknowledgement wall at our donor center located at 4300 N. Lamar. As your donations increase, your name will travel higher up our wall, showcasing your life-saving commitment. To learn more about the PhD program, click here.
Why platelets?
Platelets are the blood cells that form clots and control bleeding. Many patients, such as burn victims, premature babies and organ transplant recipients, benefit from platelet donations. Some individuals need frequent, regular platelet transfusions, such as cancer patients. Only 2 % of one whole blood donation is made up of platelets (about three tablespoons.) It takes six to eight whole blood donations, compared to one platelet donation, to provide the effective dose of platelets needed for a patient’s treatment. Platelets have a very short shelf life and expire five days after collection, so a constant influx is needed.
